Uber Lobbying on Medallion Reform and Bailout
« on: October 06, 2019, 06:07:31 PM »
https://bmp.nyc.gov/elobbyist/search

This is the website where you can look up who is lobbying who (or is it whom?).

Type Uber, Lyft etc into the search box.

You’ll see that in 2019, Uber is lobbying City Council on a medallion bailout and the budget.

Also, Stu Loeser, who is an Uber lobbyist, (used to be Bloomberg’s press secretary 2006-2012) is lobbying the City Council for “medallion reform”.

Hmmm........

Why would Uber be lobbying about medallions?

Probably the same reason they lobbied for congestion pricing.

Members of the 19-person City Council Medallion Taskforce said Thursday it could involve a partnership with banks to buy medallion loans at discounted rates — a system they claimed would only require some, if any, public funding.

The panel is recommending the city develop a public-private entity that would buy out the loans,  then refinance at market value with fair interest rates.

New York Congressman Gregory Meeks is also proposing new legislation that would guarantee taxi medallion owners wouldn't be taxed for any debt forgiveness.

Is the Robin Hood Foundation  guiding  Bhairavi Desai? Why is she working with Kirkland & Ellis?
 From 2018:
In a subsequent email to the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, which Robin Hood has funded in the past, foundation officials said they weren’t really part of the proposal for a $100 million yellow-taxi hardship fund and their role had, again, been misconstrued, according to Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the alliance.

Note that Kirkland Ellis repped Cushman & Wakefield(father of Judge Andy Borrok, who let Uber off on wheelchair requirement) and TPG(one of Uber’s founders).

Kirkland & Ellis is a  "white-shoe firm,'' why are they representing the New York Taxi Alliance for free?

**The white-shoe firm or, more specifically, the white-shoe law firm, is an old-fashioned term for the most prestigious employers in elite professions. The term originally was used only to refer to law firms but now may be used to describe some investment banking and management consulting firms.
